Author & Photographer Submissions

Thank you for your interest in Voyageur Press. We are happy to consider well-crafted book proposals and outstanding photography for possible publication. Please read the appropriate guidelines below to learn more about submitting your work.

Book Proposal Submission Guidelines

Welcome to Voyageur Press, publisher of quality nonfiction books on nature, travel, and American heritage. Founded in 1972, Voyageur takes pride in publishing titles featuring exceptional four-color photography and informative, entertaining text. With more than two hundred titles in print and foreign editions throughout the world, Voyageur publishes an average of forty new books a year.

Nature

Voyageur's large-format natural history books detail the behavior, habitat, and conservation of the world's wildlife, including wolves, bears, deer, dolphins, sea turtles, reptiles, raptors, hummingbirds, and bluebirds. Our nature authors include wilderness experts Dr. L. David Mech, Doug Perrine, Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III, and the late Erwin Bauer.

Voyageur also publishes a range of titles on the natural world, including Ken Libbrecht's bestselling pop science book, The Snowflake, and Ted Kerasote's modern wilderness adventure, Out There: In the Wild in a Wired Age. In addition, we have a successful series celebrating our nation's wild places and promoting conservation, led by Judith Sellers's Colorado Wild.

Travel

Our travel titles take readers throughout the United States, exploring historic landmarks and natural wonders through stunning photography and narrative text. Destinations range from canoe country to wine country, from the graceful plantation homes of the South to the fascinating ghost towns of the West. Our popular state backroads series explores secluded roads and unique sites, while our regional lighthouses series tours the historic sentries of America's coasts. We also have an established series of city and state photography books. Titles include Joseph Arrigo's Louisiana Plantation Homes, Philip Varney's Ghost Towns of Northern California, Shawn Perich's Backroads of Minnesota, Jon Marcus's Lighthouses of New England, and J. C. Leacock's Our Colorado.

American Heritage

Voyageur celebrates our national heritage with an extensive list of books on country life and popular culture. Paying tribute to the tractors that cultivated America, our booklist features informative field guides, how-to texts on tractor restoration, and in-depth histories such as Ralph Sanders's Ultimate John Deere. We also look at the lighter side of rural living with titles such as Dolly Mu's The Tao of Cow, Pam Percy's The Complete Chicken, and Roger Welsch's Old Tractors Never Die.

Our popular culture line includes a diverse range of books on transportation, crafts, sports, and other Americana titles. Within transportation, we publish titles on railroading and Harley-Davidson, as well as Mustangs, Corvettes, and hot rods. Our craft books, including Helen Kelley's Every Quilt Tells a Story, celebrate the arts of quilting and knitting through narrative, pictures, and history; we hope to develop a how-to line of craft titles in the future. In sports, we publish entertaining titles on the nostalgic appeal of baseball, hunting, and fishing.

Proposing a Book

If you have a manuscript or book idea that fits our publishing categories, we invite you to submit a proposal. Please note that we specialize in nonfiction. We do not publish poetry and rarely publish fiction; we also do not publish children's books or self-help books. We are especially eager at this time to review proposals on wildlife, the natural world, the Southwest, Michigan, Chicago, railroading, quilting, knitting, and baseball. With your proposal, please submit the following:

  • Cover letter introducing your book idea in 250 words or less, your writing qualifications, and an analysis of the potential audience. Who would buy your book and why? What's the appeal or hook?
  • Outline or table of contents
  • Sample chapter, if written (do not submit an entire manuscript at this stage)
  • Published clips
  • Sample photography, if applicable
  • Self-addressed, stamped return envelope
Mail your proposal to Book Proposals—Voyageur Press, MBI Publishing Company, Galtier Plaza, Suite 200, 380 Jackson Street, St. Paul, MN 55101-3885, USA. Please keep in mind that every book idea is unique. We attempt to respond to each proposal within thirty days but ask for your patience if the process takes longer. We'll let you know as soon as we've made a decision. Thank you for your interest in Voyageur Press, and we look forward to reviewing your proposal!

The Photographic Submission Process

Many of our books and calendars feature four-color photography, and Voyageur's editorial staff is always searching for exceptional images. Our publications often present the photography of a single premiere photographer, who is sometimes also the author of the book. Submitting for single-photographer works is addressed in the brochure "Book Proposal Submission Guidelines," which is also available on our website.

Some of our books feature stock photography-in other words, images purchased from a variety of sources for a one-time fee. In order for us to consider your work for our stock photography needs, we require a detailed stocklist and a list of credits. Nonreturnable samples of your work are also greatly appreciated. When appropriate projects come up, our stock photography coordinator will contact you and request a submission.

Should you be chosen to submit images, we will send specific guidelines for the project and two copies of our standard contributor-publisher agreement for your review. We ask that you return both signed copies of the agreement with your submission.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU SUBMIT ANY PHOTOGRAPHY WITHOUT A SPECIFIC REQUEST FROM THE VOYAGEUR EDITORIAL DEPARTMENT. Any unsolicited photography will be returned immediately without review. We will not accept any liability for the safe return of unsolicited images.

Please send your stocklist, credits, and nonreturnable samples to:
